I think the problem with understanding the war in Afghanistan can be split into two ways of thinking about the war. One believes this is the chance to show Democrats can win wars, save women and build a great new society. The other searches for a smoking gun. Oil, natural resources, there must be something there. All wars are based on there being financial gain, right? Yet there is nothing for us to gain by being in Afghanistan. The true horror of the action is that its a government bureaucracy simpkly functioning. The war machine is simply doing what it does and is allowed to do. But to admit that a government bureaucracy is simply operating and there is no reason, no strategy, no idea what we are doing can lead to a conclusion about the state that the two sides simply aren't ready for.
